Origins of the Olde English Bulldog

The Olde English Bulldog has a storied past that dates back to 17th century England, where the breed was originally developed for bull-baiting, a popular (though now outlawed) sport of the time. These dogs were bred for their incredible strength, tenacity, and courage, with a powerful build designed to take down large bulls. However, as bull-baiting was banned in the 1800s, the need for such a fierce dog diminished, leading to a decline in the breed.

By the 20th century, the original Old English Bulldog had almost disappeared, but dedicated breeders sought to revive and refine the breed, leading to the creation of the Olde English Bulldogge, a more modern and family-friendly version of the original. These breeders combined the genes of the original bulldogs with those of other breeds, such as the American Bulldog, Bullmastiff, and others, to create a dog with the desired physical traits and a more balanced temperament.

The Revival of a Classic Breed

The modern Olde English Bulldog, or Olde English Bulldogge, as it’s sometimes known, was officially developed in the 1970s by breeder David Leavitt. His goal was to recreate the looks and characteristics of the 18th-century bulldog while eliminating many of the health problems that plagued the breed. By carefully selecting and crossbreeding, Leavitt succeeded in producing a dog that retained the muscular build and distinctive appearance of the original bulldogs but with a gentler, more affectionate temperament.

Today’s Olde English Bulldogs are known for their loyalty, strength, and protective instincts, making them excellent family pets and guardians. Despite their tough exterior, they are incredibly loving and enjoy being around people, often forming strong bonds with their owners.
